Workshop at the UdK (University of the Arts) in Berlin.

At the beginning of 2005 I agreed to follow the call of Prof. A. Heine to speak about my work as a photographer and to do a workshop with a group of students of the University of Arts, Berlin. The theme we came up with was:

MADE IN BERLIN

The task for every of the 18 selected students was to find a craft of their choice in the City of Berlin and photograph it. Whatever seemed to be the essence of that craft to the student, they should try to capture it with the new D2 sponsored by LEICA.

    

The range of the selected crafts were wide and we had amazingly many photographs. We sat down with every student and went through their many pictures and selected together the strong images that represented the craft in the specific way the students had seen it.

     

There were many challenges on different levels:
They had to find a relationship with

•   the craft they were photographing, (the material, the tools, etc.)
  
•   the craftsmen, (getting to the point where the person who worked let them photograph,    see what they were drawn to photographically)
  
•   the place with its circumstances, (was it very dark or real moist and smelly or huge and   vast or filled with things or a tiny room…)
  
•   the digital media versus the analogue media (the different way to approach a theme)

The outcome I thought was astonishingly rich and beautiful.
